Term expert witness 
Plain Language Definition a person who has special knowledge or experience who testifies in court to help the jury or judge understand the evidence in their subject area 
Context/Example Witnesses cannot give opinions because the jury reaches its own opinion from the facts; but an *expert witness* can give an opinion.
